The Blue Moon
The Blue Moon, a 29.62 carat (ct) blue diamond crystal, was discovered at the Cullinan mine in South Africa in 2014. It was eventually faceted into a 12.03 ct gem graded Fancy Vivid blue, Internally Flawless by GIA.
Did you know that South Africa is the birthplace of the modern diamond industry? Since their discovery in the 1860s, diamonds have been the lifeblood of South Africa’s economy. South Africa is currently the world’s 6th largest producer of diamonds by volume.
The diamond industry creates jobs for tens of thousands of South Africans — diamond mining alone employed 14,000 people in 2020 — and taxes on diamond companies help build roads, schools and hospitals. As a result, a greater number of children in mining towns attend school than in non-mining areas.
